| Local government protection programs | |||
|
There are
hundreds of county and municipal governments in North Carolina, and many
of them are aggressively working to protect open spaces that are important
to their communities. Most of the land being protected at the local level
is for parks and greenways. Watershed management, floodplain management
and cultural preservation are other common reasons for local land protection
efforts. During the first 18 months of the Million Acre Initiative, local
governments protected at least 10,000 acres of open space. Click below
