There are hundreds of county and municipal governments in North Carolina, and many of them are aggressively working to protect open spaces that are important to their communities. Most of the land being protected at the local level is for parks and greenways. Watershed management, floodplain management and cultural preservation are other common reasons for local land protection efforts. During the first 18 months of the Million Acre Initiative, local governments protected at least 10,000 acres of open space.
