Permanently
protected lands map
The
map below shows the 2.9 million acres of permanently protected land in
North Carolina. The map was complied as part of a larger geographic information
system project during which the North Carolina Center for Geographic Information
and Analysis worked with land protection partners across the state to
create a series of maps of protected open space. The effort resulted in
a data set of four compact disks. The set, entitled Basin Pro Million
Acre Edition, is available for purchase.

Ownership
of permanently protected lands
The chart
below represents the ownership of the 2.8 million acres of protected land
that existed in January 1999. Seventy-five percent of our state's preserved
land is owned by the federal government, 19 percent is owned by the state
government, 4 percent is owned by nonprofit groups, and approximately
two percent is owned by local governments.
